The problem
Certain minerals (including tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold) are linked with funding killing, violence, rape, and other human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other conflict zones. These minerals can enter multinational company supply chains, and are used in consumer products such as laptops, mobile phones and cars. Companies can take a number of actions to ensure responsible sourcing of minerals, including through their direct mining practices (if they are in the mining industry); compliance with regulations on conflict minerals (such as the Dodd-Frank Conflict Minerals rules); and engagement with their supply chain on sourcing of minerals, including their level of diligence performed in assessing partners' mineral sourcing
